No Power? No Problem for Pizza-Makers

Lack of electricity doesn't stop dedicated Italian pie-makers.

Illiano's Pizzaria opened at 2 p.m. Sunday on South Main Street and the team chose to stay the course and make pizza with their gas-fired ovens.

A glass wall beside the pizza bay allowed sunlight to stream in, as more 55 pizzas were made and delivered to the CL&P headquarters in Madison to feed dozens of crews working on Connecticut's downed power lines.

Illiano's staff, with battery-fueled work phones and headlamps, continued to make pizzas until 9 p.m. Sunday. Despite running out of folded boxes and rushing for ingredients, more than 300 pizzas were made.

Monday could provide the same challenges, as the timeline of power restoration is uncertain. As of Monday at 1:10 p.m., 46 percent of Middletown CL&P customers, 10,046, remained without service.
