1,500 Plus Without Power as Severe Thunderstorms, Hail Strike Middletown [VIDEOS]

UPDATE: 7:28 p.m.

Middletown's outages are down to 854, or 3 percent of CL&P customers.

Blogger Alicia Yost of Portland sent us an unbelievable video of HAIL on her back deck! (see video).

Intrepid reporter Dawn Piscitelli offered us this nugget: Also, for those without power who are CL & P customers, you can text 24612 then type outage and your zip code for an update on service and repair.

Middletown Patch readers on Facebook are reporting there are significant outages around the city. At 3:38 p.m., CL&P reported 1,435 outages in Middletown — 6 percent of its customers. By 4:07 p.m., the number had climbed to 1,509.

  • Dawn: Lost power near Aetna 4 times so far, but it keeps coming back. Officially out after seventh blackout. CL&P reports over 500 customers in our area without power. They're dispatching crews.
  • Carolyn: Out of power off of Atkins Street. Flickered for about 10 minutes before it finally went out for good.

Middletown Patch drove down Grand and Pearl Street during the height of Wednesday afternoon's storm — and caught two teens standing outside, shirtless, near the stop sign at the corner (see video).

    ORIGINAL VERSION:

A storm cloud formed over Berlin, Cromwell and other towns just north of Middletown, heading east Wednesday afternoon.

Patch captured this video from Main Street in Middletown depicting the lightning strikes around 2:30 p.m.

At the same time this video was shot, a WFSB reporter reported from his Twitter account (@KallMeKG) that it was downpouring severely on I-91 in Cromwell. He also said traffic was reduced to 20 mph due to the downpour.

Check back with Patch for updates as they develop.
