A woman who had been staying in Milford was arrested on Monday after she allegedly took a taxi to her brother's home, broke into the house, stole $300, and drove away in her stepfather’s car.

Beth Newman, 47, reportedly forced her way through a windowpane in the exterior of her brother’s Meadowbrook Road home, took the cash and the car keys, and fled, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier. When her brother came home and reported the incident to police, he said he suspected his sister and requested her arrest.

Newman allegedly took her stepfather’s van -- the stepfather requested her arrest as well, Lussier said.

The police, in conjunction with Newman’s brother and Milford police, determined she was staying in Milford and tracked her down at the on the Boston Post Road, according to the police report.

Newman was taken into custody, transported to Fairfield Police headquarters, and charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, and sixth-degree larceny, according to the report.

She was released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 17.
