Do You Remember This Mural?

Milford Arts Council's Permanent Art Collection Committee asks Milford Residents to Adopt A Mural

Remember this mural? For nearly 40 years, We Shall Pass This Way But Once by Frank Rutkoski and Louis Agostini, greeted students as they entered Milford’s Central Grammar School on West River Street. In 1986, when the school was being demolished, Bill Meddick and Frank Vespi, then Executive Director of Milford Fine Arts and Board of Education Arts Coordinator respectively, rescued a large portion of it – approximately 5’ x 7’8”.

This historic work of art was produced under the WPA (Works Projects Administration), which was started by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933. The WPA employed struggling out-of-work artists to produce artwork during the Great Depression.

Several nearby Connecticut towns, including Stamford, Norwalk, Greenwich and New Haven, have raised money to restore their WPA art, preserving their precious heritage. Join us in adopting They Shall Pass This Way But Once. Please make a donation today.

Today, this mural, with its paint loss and surface damage, needs extensive professional restoration. When completed, it will be hung in the Milford Library for all to enjoy.
