New Details Released About Massive Milford Scrapyard Fire: UPDATE (9:30 P.M.)

A large amount of smoke has engulfed part of Route 1 in Milford. Firefighters are on the scene of a major commercial fire.

MILFORD, CT — More than 40 firefighters battled a "stubborn" fire for five hours at a city-based scrapyard that sent plumes of black smoke over Route 1. The fire broke out around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Milford Auto Recycling Co., a scrapyard located off of Route 1 on South Washington Street, said Milford Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi. Firefighters remained on scene until around 8 p.m.

A total of about 30 cars that were piled up five to six high and were scheduled to be turned into scrap caught on fire, Fabrizi said. The fire spread to adjacent tires, which led to complications in extinguishing the blaze.

Fabrizi said no one was injured and quick work by firefighters helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Fabrizi said firefighters used foam to put out the blaze. About 30 Milford firefighters were on the scene alone and mutual aid arrived from Stratford and other nearby departments.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Fabrizi said, while adding he's unclear whether the business will be able to resume operations on Wednesday.
