Driver Extricated from Jeep After Crash on Harvester Road

The one-vehicle accident occurred at around 9 o'clock on Sunday morning.

Driver Extricated from Jeep After Crash on Harvester Road

A young driver was hospitalized Sunday morning, after losing control of his Jeep Grand Cherokee on Harvester Road at around 9 a.m. Fire Department Spokesman Kevin Catalano said the jeep barrelled through the side yard of a residence for about 100 feet before landing on its side, completely knocking over a 30 foot tree before slamming into a larger tree.

Monroe and Stepney volunteer firefighters extricated the driver from his mangled vehicle by cutting off part of the roof while the vehicle was on its side, and had the patient out in about 15 minutes, Catalano said.

Catalano said the driver was tossed to the back of the jeep during the crash.

Monroe EMS and police officers also responded to the scene.

"The driver was a young man who officials were told was visiting someone on nearby Crestwood Road," Catalano said. "The occupant was conscious and treated by Monroe EMS and AMR before being transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown although the make and model of the vehicle were hardly recognizable due to the impact of the crash."

"Nearby residents from the otherwise quiet neighborhood descended upon the scene and initially reported the car to be on fire with someone trapped inside, but first arriving firefighters found only steam and light smoke coming from the engine," Catalano added.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Harvester and Crestwood roads.

"This was the second serious extrication in Monroe in the past two weeks," Catalano said. "A young man was critically injured in a single-car crash on Purdy Hill Road on August 30th."
