$80,000 in Jewelry Reported Stolen from New Canaan Home

New Canaan police say they’ve questioned a babysitter as they investigate a report of $80,000 in jewelry missing from a town home.

At 9:03 p.m. on April 11, police received a complaint from an Oenoke Ridge Road resident that he found jewelry missing from two closets in his home that had been entered, according to Lt. Vincent DeMaio, a New Canaan police spokesman.

The babysitter had been watching the homeowner’s children, and the homeowner returned to pick up the kids and leave again—at which time the babysitter is reported to have left the house, too, police said. The homeowner returned about one hour later to find the jewelry missing, DeMaio said.

The home itself showed no signs of forced entry, he said.

The $80,000 in missing items included less than one dozen pieces, DeMaio said.

“It was all high-end jewelry,” he said.
