MAP: Town-by-Town Look at Connecticut Prison Inmate Population

The CT DOC operates 15 facilities in Connecticut and houses 15691 inmates.

The Connecticut Department of Corrections houses 15691 inmates, a majority of whom have self reported as being from within the state. As of March 1, 11850 of the inmates in the system have been sentenced, 3269 have been accused and the rest are federal inmates. A majority of the inmates are men with only 1103 female inmates in the DOC facility.

The DOC currently operates 15 facilities:

  1. Bridgeport Correctional Center: A level 4 high-security prison that houses both pretrial and sentenced offenders. The facility also manages a level 2 minimum security prison for inmates qualified for outside clearance jobs and community support programs. Inmates: 783.
  2. Brooklyn Correctional Institution: A level 3 medium-security facility. Inmates: 505.
  3. Cheshire Correctional Institution: A level 4 security prison that houses long-term, adult sentenced offenders. It also operates specialized housing units. Inmates: 1369.
  4. Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center (Uncasville): A level 3,4 security prison that confines both pretrial and sentenced offenders. Inmates: 724.
  5. Enfield Correctional Institution: A level 3 medium-security facility for sentenced offenders. Inmates: 720.
  6. Garner Correctional Institution (Newtown): A level 4 high-security facility for both pretrial and sentenced offenders. Both pretrial and sentenced offenders are assigned here based on their mental health needs. Inmates: 566.
  7. Hartford Correctional Center: A level 4 high-security prison that primarily holds pretrial offenders. Inmates: 956.
  8. MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution (Suffield): A level 4-5, high/maximum security prison for long-term sentenced offenders, protective custody offenders and high bond unsentenced offenders. It is the largest correctional facility in New England. Inmates: 522.
  9. Manson Youth Institution (Cheshire): A level 4 high-security prison that houses sentenced inmates under the age of 21. Inmates: 605.
  10. New Haven Correctional Center: A level 4 high-security facility that houses primarily pretrial offenders. Inmates: 693.
  11. Northern Correctional Institution (Somers): A level 5 maximum-security institution. It is designated to manage those inmates who have demonstrated a serious inability to adjust to confinement posing a threat to the safety and security of the community, staff and other inmates, are sentenced to death, or posses a high bond. Inmates: 232.
  12. Osborn Correctional Institution (Somers): A level 3 medium-security institution. Inmates: 1991.
  13. Robinson Correctional Institution (Enfield): A level 3 medium-security facility for sentenced offenders. Inmates: 1474.
  14. Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution (and the Cybulski Community Reintegration Center) (Enfield): Both institutions protect the public and staff by providing a safe, secure and humane environment where offenders participate in a mandatory structured process that instills a high standard of accountability and an expectation of responsibility on the part of the offender. Inmates: 1147
  15. York Correctional Institution (Niantic): A level 2-5 high-security facility that serves as the state’s only institution for female offenders. Inmates: 1103.

Six inmates have reported as being from an unknown location in Connecticut.
