Blumenthal Draws Flak from GOP for Sandy Hook Comments

A state GOP analyst called Blumenthal a sociopath for claiming he was there as families learned the tragic news.

A Ted Cruz super PAC ad that championed his efforts to stop gun legislation after the Sandy Hook school shooting led to critisism from Connecticut’s two U.S. senators.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said on MSNBC’s Hardball that he was at the scene as parents and others learned the devastating news about who had died.

“I was there when those families learned that their... 20 children and six great educators would not be coming home,” Blumenthal said after correcting himself about the number of people that died.

That led to some including state GOP staff member Chris Healy to call Blumenthal a liar.

Healy called Blumenthal a sociopath on Facebook.

“Now, to claim the moral high ground against supporters of the Second Amendment and to wrap himself in the souls of those murdered children, Dick Blumenthal is so twisted and depraved, he claimed to have stood next to Gov. Dan Malloy who did have the awful job of informing parents, spouses and family members of the tragic senseless deaths,” he said.

Blumenthal’s office released a statement saying that the senator was at the Sandy Hook firehouse and outside of the room where Gov. Dannel Malloy told the families about what had happened.

“So he saw the families as they left after learning that news,” his office staff said in a statement.

The Hartford Courant confirmed that Blumenthal was at the school the entire day and stayed through the evening.
