Labor Day Parade Route, Road Closures, No Parking

Newtown's 49th Labor Day parade kicks off 10 a.m., Monday starting at the ambulance garage, 77 Main St., and ending on Queen Street.

Thousands of people from across the region will converge on town for one of the biggest Labor Day parades around.

Police said they plan to close roads starting at 9:45 a.m. and they will remain close until about 12:30 p.m. Here is the list of roads that will be closed:

  • Mount Pleasant Road/Route 25 south from Reservoir Road
  • Main Street at Academy Lane, Currituck Road, Hanover Road, Schoolhouse Hill Road, West Street
  • Church Hill Road from Main Street to The Boulevard
  • Route 302/Sugar Street from Elm Drive to Main Street.
  • Route 25/Main Street, north from Elizabeth Street
  • Queen Street, north from Elizabeth Street

No parking signs also will be placed on several road stretches:

  • The Boulevard from Church Hill Road to Schoolhouse Hill Road
  • Schoolhouse Hill Road from The Boulevard to Main Street
  • Hanover Road from Main Street at 100 feet
  • Elm Drive (southbound side only from Route 302 to Hawley Road)

Did you know both people and animals will be marching? For a rundown of some of the animals, check out Adria Henderson's column.

Don't forget the wallet as well, if not for the vendors than for the multitude of groups organizing fundraisers. For instance, the girls basketball team is sponsoring a Moonbounce and giant air slide ($2 a ride) while the girls volleyball team will be selling donuts to raise money for their team expenses.

Finally, consider bringing a donation to help benefit the local food pantry. Check out the story here.
