7th-grader Jessie Turner recently won an award in a world-wide art competition.

Jessie Turner's Art and Compassion Are Award-Winning!
  • Name: Jessie Turner
  • Age: 13
  • School:
  • Activities: Plays trumpet in the school band and community service.
  • Other Interests: Drawing, playing with her dogs and taking care of her five birds and her turtle.
  • Future Plans: To go to college and continue to find ways to help others.
  • Accomplishments: This past November, the 7th-grade Emerald students exchanged culturally themed art pieces with a partner class in Tahuilco, Mexico. Jessie’s piece, titled Community Round Up, was selected for Creative Connections' 2011 International Childrens Art Exhibition. This is quite an achievement; her piece was selected as one of 250 out of nearly 3,000 pieces of student artwork from 72 ArtLink exchanges between students in the US and partner classes in 27 countries. Students participating in ArtLink are asked to create artwork reflecting some aspect of their life and culture to be shared with their partner class. This year, in recognition of the importance of water in all cultures and the different roles it might play, students were asked to incorporate water into their artwork. Jurors were asked to select those pieces which they believed offered the best insight into the artist’s life and culture in the context of the water theme. Jessie was recognized at an opening banquet held at the  2011 International Children's Art Exhibition at Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk on May 19 where she received a certificate of merit for her work. The banquet was attended by other winners from all over the world. Her piece will be among those on display there through the end of June.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Jessie is always thinking of others, as well as participating in the school Community Round Up she donates to St. Jude’s Hospital.
