We started in 1968 with the actions of a few, inspiring others with the hope of saving open space and then lost our way. Restoring an organization begins at a place and condition in time to a destination that holds the promise of what is possible. It is a journey through unfamiliar territory guided by individuals with a common interest who joined to help find a way as well as to define the destination.
For the first time in decades, on June 1, at the we held an annual meeting to elect nine people to the board of directors and to approve the updating of documents that guide the conduct of our organization.
The business meeting was followed by a presentation from the president of the Branford Land Trust, Meg Kilgore. We learned a great deal about what it takes to grow a land trust; the challenges of becoming a successful organization and part of the social fabric of the community in which we live.
On July 6, the land trust board met and filled three of the four officer positions: President: David Sargent; Vice President: Tom DeMatteo; and Secretary: Otto Schaefer. The treasurer’s position is, at the moment, unfilled. We also approved the reservation of domain names for our land trust’s web site now being developed (nbland.org and nblandtrust.org), among other matters that were taken up by the board.
So here we are. Knowing that we have not yet reached the land of destination, we need more members to join our journey. We need your talent, enthusiasm and ability to motivate others to join and help do the work of protecting our town’s open spaces.
The cost of membership is a reasonable $25 per year for individuals and families; $50 for business members. Checks should be made out to NBLCT and mailed to NBLCT P.O. Box 378, North Branford, 06471.
