Police: Man Charged With DUI After Running Into Cruiser

Allegedly said he'd been drinking Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Police: Man Charged With DUI After Running Into Cruiser

A city man was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly driving into the back of a parked police cruiser while intoxicated.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Cotto said the incident occurred during a traffic stop in front of Stop & Shop at 385 Connecticut Avenue. She said the officer whose cruiser was struck was acting as back-up for the officer who initiated the stop, and was out of his car when it was hit.

Cotto said the cruiser was reported struck at 12:21 a.m. by a 1996 Ford Explorer being driven by Andrew Dies, 27, of 19 Oakfield Rd.

Officers at the scene reported Dies had the smell of alcohol on his breath and said he allegedly admitted to having consumed five drinks; specifically Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Dies allegedly failed a field sobriety test, so he was taken to Police Headquarters to have his blood alcohol content measured.

In two measurements, Cotto said, Dies was found to have ratios of blood alcohol content of 0.181 and 0.170 of one percent. State law says a motorist is operating under the influence liquor with a blood alcohol content at or above 0.08.

Dies was charged with obstructing the right of way of an emergency vehicle and operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was held on $500 bond and given a court date of Oct. 4.
