SoNo Train Station Seeking Artists

Public art grant fuels call for proposals

SoNo Train Station Seeking Artists SoNo Train Station Seeking Artists

The Norwalk Arts Commission and the Norwalk Parking Authority are moving forward with plans to open a call for artists to transform the tunnel connecting the Eastbound and Westbound train platforms at the Part of a program offered by the Department of Transportation, the project has been in the works for a number of years.

Kathryn Hebert, director of the Norwalk Parking Authority, has been working with the Norwalk Transit Authority on enhancing and improving the facilities used by nearly 2000 passengers a day. The funding comes for a Federal Transportation Enhancement Public Art Program grant.

According to Hebert, all qualified professional artists, or teams of artists from Norwalk, the surrounding area can submit proposals for a permanent art installation at the station.

Details of the requirements will be posted on the City of Norwalk’s website, but Hebert encourages artists to visit the station now. The installation can be either in the tunnel or on the eastbound side of the station, and reflect a theme of the surrounding community of South Norwalk. Historically, the area around the station was once known as "Whistleville" which was home to many Hungarian and Italian immigrants. The train tracks curved through this hilly area prompting trains to blow their whistles as they chugged through.

For more information about the project contact Kathryn Hebert at 203-854-7736 or khebert@norwalkct.org.

Jackie Lightfield is the chairwoman of the Norwalk Arts Commission.
