Several Cars Broken Into in Oxford

The Oxford Resident Trooper’s Office is investigating a string of car thefts that occurred on Punkup Road and three surrounding streets early Sunday morning.

Unlocked vehicles parked in driveways on Silano Drive, Punkup Road, Belinksy Circle, and Tetlak Lane were broken into between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to police. Items that were stolen include loose change and portable electronics.

The suspects - two thin white males in their late teens or early 20s - were on bicycles when they were caught on a surveillance camera attached to someone’s home in the area, Resident Trooper Sgt. Dan Semosky said. He said police have not yet identified the suspects because the video doesn’t show their faces up close, but police are working on leads.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 203.888.4353. All calls will be kept confidential, Semosky said.

In the meantime, Semosky urges people in the community, particularly in the area where the thefts occurred, to not leave any valuables in their cars - take out all such as money (even loose change), wallets, computers, GPS units, cell phones or any other valuables. And he urges people to lock their doors even if they haven’t had a problem with break-ins in the past.

The Silano and Punkup area has a neighborhood watch organization because break-ins have happened there in the past, he said.

“This kind of thing doesn’t happen a lot, but it does happen here and in all surrounding towns so people should be careful,” he said.
