P! News Attends Hartford SantaCon!

What happens when 300 Santas walk into a bar?

Approximately 300 people dressed as Santa, his helpers or any other Christmas-themed character walked from one Hartford drinking establishment to the next, all for a good cause this month. Greg Nobile of P!News joined the 2012 Hartford SantaCon, an annual event that invites people to suit-up, get into the holiday spirit, support local businesses and raise money for local charities.

Santas and Mrs. Clauses showed up in droves but elves, snowflakes, Frosty the Snowmans, little drummer boys and Christmas decorations all mixed and mingled throughout the evening to live entertainment at each stop. Musicians improvised and added Santa references into popular cover songs and the crowd was offered drink specials all night long.

There was lots of singing, laughing and shenanigans but more importantly, there was lots of holiday cheer.

One Christmas Elf said, "I used to hate Christmas, now I love it."

According to Wikipedia, "SantaCon is an annual mass gathering of people dressed in Santa Claus costumes parading publicly on streets and in bars in cities around the world. The focus is on spontaneity and creativity, while having a good time and spreading cheer and goodwill."

Miss Candy Cane, the hostess and event organizer for the Hartford event said that the Santas, Mrs. Clauses, elves and their friends donated $600 to two Hartford charities. SantaCon is not just a Hartford event, however. The event claims to take place in 276 locations worldwide, and it appears to be gaining popularity.

With rules like you must address everyone as "Santa", you should "ho-ho-ho" like Santa, you ought to give out gifts like Santa, you might want to drink like Santa and no Santa's get left behind, it would be hard not feel the holiday cheer!

Visit the S antaCon website for more information and scheduled events. Info about the Hartford based SantaCon can be found here.
