Hurricane Sandy has all the potential to be a historic storm that devastates a significant portion of the northeast, and even before the storm has gotten near we are already seeing signs of its strength.

Connecticut Light and Power began reporting power outages across the state as high winds from Hurricane Sandy, a category 1 hurricane, hit early Monday afternoon. As many as 61,936 homes were without power at 3 p.m., according to the CL&P Outage Map.

At 3 p.m. the CL&P Outage Map reported 223 affected customers in Simsbury–only two percent of the 10,121 customers served by the utilities company.

There was only one customer reporting an outage in Avon at 3 p.m. and just 18 in Canton. Granby is reporting 336 outages or 1 percent of CL&P's 6,030 Granby customers.

West Hartford was reporting only 66 outages at 3 p.m.

Simsbury town officials announced on Monday that CL&P agreed to provide an embedded line crew to support public works personnel.
