Alumni staff and faculty gathered at a luncheon at Central School on April 3rd in celebration of the school's 100th anniversary year.  More than two dozen guests were on hand, sharing a host of memories about their time at the school, which first opened its doors in September 1913.

In an emailed message to the Central School community the day after the event, Principal Edie Balkun wrote, “The ‘100th Birthday Retiree and Guest Luncheon’ was a tremendous success!  The hugs, tears of joy, laughter, and memories filled the room! I still have a lump in my throat and am so glad that this idea was shared by committee members and became a reality.”

Those attending the luncheon took a moment to pose for a group photo with a sign wishing Central a "Happy 100th."  All students and staff at the school have received a copy of this sign and they—as well as all former Central students, staff and faculty—have been encouraged to take a photo with it so it can be hung inside the school on a "Celebration Wall," which continues to fill with photos taken by families who have traveled with the sign to places as nearby as Hartford to places as far away as the Virgin Islands and Argentina.

Already the Celebration Wall includes photos of local “celebrities” such as Simsbury Public Schools Superintendent Matt Curtis, Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman and U.S. Olympian Sara Hendershot. Other familiar faces include Mickey Mouse, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler John Cena as well as representatives from NBC Connecticut—Gerry Brooks, Keisha Grant, Brad Field and the entire morning crew.

The celebration of the anniversary year continues throughout 2013, with a birthday celebration scheduled for September and an Open House on November 3. For more information, visit www.simsbury.k12.ct.us/CentralSchool100.
