Incoming Weather, PZC and Feasibility Architect

So here’s the scoop for today, Jan. 18, 2011.

Sleet, Snow and Ice  –

After a short break following a storm that dropped 19 inches of snow on Southington last week, winter weather returns and could make for a tough commute throughout the day today.

According to the National Weather Service, snow and sleet is expected at points during the day and into the afternoon with heavier accumulation expected during a mix of sleet and snow after 5 p.m. As much as 3 to 5 inches are expected with rain and freezing rain coming after 9 p.m.

Town Names Architect for Middle School Feasibility Study –

The Board of Education has awarded development of a middle school feasibility study to Fletcher Thompson, an architect group out of Connecticut and New Jersey.

The study will allow the town to move forward in developing a plan to address overcrowding at the middle schools in an economically feasible way, especially given the financial difficulties facing the state and taxpayers with the struggling economy.

Fletcher Thompson will receive approximately $38,000 in conducting the study and has developed a reputation as a strong partner with the school district, officials said. They completed renovations at the Plantsville Elementary School.

PZC Expected to Draw Turnout –

The Planning and Zoning Commission will take on three proposal that have drawn interest from the community tonight during their regularly scheduled meeting at Southington Town Hall, 75 Main St., beginning at 7 p.m.

The meeting will include a presentation regarding a proposal by the town to sell and lease back the North Center School property on North Main Street, a hearing for a 14 unit complex proposed along Carter Lane and a vote on a daycare proposal along West Street.

If cancelled due to weather, a special meeting could be held or the commission would pick of the issues during their first February meeting.
