Sikh Temple Sets Candlelight Vigil for Sand Hook Victims

Members of the Sikh Temple, Gurdwara Guru Nanak Danbar in Southington, have come together and will open their doors to the public this week as they host a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims in the tragic shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown last week.

The incident, which police said was the act of a lone gunman, led to the deaths of 26 people including 20 children after Adam Lanza entered the school and open fired on staff and students before taking his own life.

"Our hearts are broken. Our spirits are strong," an announcement for the event reads.

The vigil will include several prayers from all denominations, as well as guest speakers including State Sen. Joseph Markley and others, members of the congregation said Tuesday. A moment of silence will also be observed and the names of the victims are read.

The public is encouraged to attend. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at the temple, located at 1610 West St. in Southington. Candles will be provided.
