3 Injured In Stamford Water Treatment Facility Explosion: FD

Fire officials said a Stamford water treatment facility was damaged by a large explosion.

STAMFORD, CT — A large explosion at a Stamford water treatment facility on Thursday left several employees injured, Stamford fire officials said. Firefighters responded to the facility at 111 Harbor View Avenue sometime after 10:50 p.m. and were able to confirm the explosion, which caused damage to the building.

Facility officials told arriving firefighters the building may have suffered a dust explosion, fire officials said in a statement.

Two injured employees were immediately treated and transported to a hospital, officials said. A third employee later reported he was injured and was also transported to a hospital.

"Firefighters worked with plant officials to ensure all facility personnel were accounted for, assess the extent of the damage and to secure the processes that were occurring in the building, preventing another explosion," officials said in a statement.

There was no fire observed, however several garage doors and windows were displaced by the explosion, officials said. Although the facility was damaged, it has contingency plans in place for treating sewage in the event of a facility failure, officials said.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials, as well as local officials, were notified of the incident, and the Stamford Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the incident.
