Cops: Man Steals Keys While at Hospital, Takes Car Upon Exit

A 19-year-old Newfield Ave. man was arrested by police Saturday after allegedly stealing a car from the Tully Center parking lot after receiving medical treatment there, police announced Monday morning.

Police said Bacilio Martinez was reportedly received some stitches and, as he was leaving the center at approximately 6 p.m., spotted car keys on a chair near the counter. Martinez allegedly picked up the keys, took them out to the parking lot and found the car to which they belong, police said, likely by using the automatic key fob to unlock the car form a distance.

Shortly after Martinez allegedly drove away in the car, it was reported stolen and patrol units spotted the vehicle near by on Forest Street. At Forest and Grove streets, Martinez allegedly spotted the patrol unit following him and jumped out of the vehicle, attempting to run from the scene, authorities said.

Martinez was caught and arrested a short distance later. He faces charges of first-degree larceny, second-degree burglary, operating a vehicle without a license and resisting arrest. He was due in court Monday.
