Greenwich Teen Charged with Assault, DUI in Stamford Crash

An underage Greenwich teenager has been charged with driving under the influence in connection to a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Stamford in January, Stamford Police announced Monday.

According to Sgt. Andrew Gallagher, Alexa C. Stafford, 18, of Rustic View Rd., has been charged in a January 11, 2013, motor vehicle crash following an investigation by the Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.

The crash, which occurred at Canal and North State streets at approximately 11:40 p.m., sent four people to the hospital.

Gallagher said a 2006 Mitsubishi Galant carrying three occupants was struck in the passenger's side by a 2012 Ford Focus that had allegedly run a red light and was traveling at twice the posted speed limit. The Focus was being operated by Stafford, Gallagher said.

All four occupants were taken to Norwalk Hospital. The front passenger of the Mitsubishi was transferred to the critical care unit at Westchester Medical Center for several weeks before being transferred to a long-term rehabilitation facility.

Gallagher said alcohol was recovered from Stafford's vehicle, and it was allegedly detected that she had an elevated blood alcohol level.

Stafford faces charges of operating under the influence, possession of alcohol by a minor, reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control signal and two counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle

She was released on $25,000 surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment on February 27, 2013.
