Off-Duty Officer Stops Alleged Shoplifters in Stamford

A Darien officer stopped alleged shoplifters from Bridgeport from stealing more than $1,000 in good at a Stamford convenience store.

Officers dispatched to a convenience store for reports of shoplifting suspects being detained on the scene discovered an off-duty Darien police officer holding a suspect outside the store, police said Wednesday.

Police identified the suspect still being detained as 39-year-old Dwayne L. Brown from the 900 block of Capital Ave. in Bridgeport. The manager of the store informed authorities the Dairen officer allegedly spotted three suspects attempting to leave the store with several shopping carts full of unpaid goods, police said. 

Authorities said they were given descriptions of the other two suspects and officers put out a bulletin. The other two suspects were identified as William J. Mayo, 50, of Vine St. in Bridgeport, and Wesley V. McClain, 42, homeless.

The manager then explained to police that the Darien officer had gone outside and attempted to detain Brown while the manager tried to help but was allegedly struck by McClain several times, police said.

The other suspects were picked up by police some time later.They all face the same charges of fourth-degree larceny (shoplifting), third-degree robbery, third-degree assault, fourth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, third-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and third-degree conspiracy to commit assault.

Other Arrests

William C. Kelley, 32, of Lawn Ave., was charged Tuesday morning with second-degree breach of peace.

Fitzroy Lyle, 56, of W. Main St., was charged Tuesday morning with possession of hallucinogens, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Roger Morales, 22, of William St., was charged early Wednesday morning with risk of injury to a child and second-degree breach of peace (threatening).

Ilir Muhametaj, 26, of Field St., was charged Tuesday night with third-degree criminal trespass and possession of marijuana.

Elmer Najera, 32, of Spruce St., was charged early Wednesday morning with risk of injury to a child. 

Alexander Orisas, 39, of Victory St., was charged early Tuesday morning with disorderly conduct, fourth-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

James Rockwood, 64, of Strawberry Hill Ave., was charged Tuesday afternoon with second-degree larceny and first-degree identity theft.

Jennifer S. Siberon, 25, of Weebs Hill Rd., was charged Tuesday night with second-degree failure to appear.

Sashain Sahshawna Styles, 30, of Fenton Ave. in Bronx, NY, was charged Tuesday afternoon with second-degree failure to appear.
