Police say a Stamford man was punched in the face and had his phone taken by a group of men.

A man walking along Virgil Ave. was accosted by a group of 10 to 15 men Saturday evening, police said Monday.

According to authorities, the men surrounded him as he was walking down the street and took the man's phone.They broke it, and one of the men proceeded to punch the victim in the eye, police said.

The victim said he did not know any of the assailants at all, police reported.

The assailants ran from the scene following the assault. There have been no arrests yet, police said.

In other police news, a Stamford man was arrested following a traffic stop after police found drugs on his person, they said Monday.

Evans Leaward Powell, 20, of Ursula Pl., performed an illegal u-turn in the middle of the road near the intersection of Tresser Blvd. and Greenwich Ave., leading to a traffic stop, authorities said.

During the stop, police noticed a knife sticking out of Powell's pocket, said police. A further search of Powell for additional weapons turned up a small amount of marijuana also in his pocket, they said.

When police attempted to handcuff Powell, he became enraged, police said. He began flailing his arms and had to be subdued, according to authorities.

Powell faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.

A on a sixth-degree larceny charge stemming from the theft of $73 worth of merchandise from the Stop & Shop on West Putnam Avenue.

were called to the store by a store security officer about 4:50 a.m. April 5 who reported he saw a man with several paper bags in a shopping cart leave the store without paying for the items and put the bags in his vehicle.

Patrick C. Miller, 33, who gave an address of 11 Tuttle St., Stamford, was charged with sixth degree larceny. He was released after posting $100 bond and scheduled to appear April 12 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Other arrests:

Kevin Restrepo, 22, of Cove Road, was arrested on charges of reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to appear

Matthew B Salvatore, 35, of Wedgemere Road, and Michelle Salvatore, 37, of Courtland Hill Street, were both arrested on domestic charges of breaching the peace.
