Teens on Bikes Snatch 3 More iPhones in Downtown Stamford

Total number of incidents since September reaches 26.

Teens on Bikes Snatch 3 More iPhones in Downtown Stamford

Three more cell phones were snatched from the hands of women walking in downtown Stamford over the last few days, Lt. Diedrich Hohn said Wednesday morning.

The issue is one the department has been dealing with over the last couple of months. Five arrests have been made so far, but the problem persists and is becoming a regular irritation for detectives, according to Hohn.

Since Monday, three new cases have popped up, Hohn said.

  • A 21-year-old woman walking along Edith Sherman Dr. at 1 p.m. was talking on her iPhone when a black teen male on a mountain bike snatched the phone from her hand and kept riding.
  • An incident that occurred during the early afternoon on Dec. 4 at the corner of Broad and Summer streets where a woman speaking on her phone had it taken out of her hand by a black teen male in a hoodie riding a mountain bike.
  • At 4 p.m. on Dec. 4th, a woman walking with a baby in a stroller near the intersection of Spring and Summer streets had her phone stolen from a cupholder on the stroller by a black teen male on a BMX-style bike in a hoodie.

The three incidents bring the total number of stolen phones to 26 since the department started keeping track during the last week of September, Hohn said.
