DPNC is April's Business of the Month!
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce names the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center its April Business of the Month!
Every month the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) highlights a member business deserving of special recognition. For the month of April, we are excited to announce the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, located at 109 Pequotsepos Rd in Mystic, as the recipient of the GMCC’s Business of the Month award. The honor is nomination-based and determined by several factors, including community involvement and overall success.
Located in Mystic, CT, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is a combination wildlife sanctuary, natural history museum, and educational facility highlighting the habitats of southeastern Connecticut. Their mission is to inspire and nurture appreciation and scientific understanding of the natural world and foster a personal environmental ethic.
The Nature Center offers a variety of interesting and informative environmental education programs and hikes for all ages, year-round. Attractions include exhibits in the Natural History Museum, the Nature Center Store featuring gifts and books for outdoor enthusiasts, and the Nature Preschool. They also maintain an interconnected system of hiking trails on land owned by the Denison Homestead and Avalonia Land Conservancy.
In recent news, the Nature Center has launched a successful campaign to save the Coogan Farm, a beautiful 45-acre property which is the last parcel of undeveloped land between downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and the Mystic Aquarium. Plans for the Coogan Farm include the expansion and enhancement of a network of hiking trails, and the creation of a community garden. "We like the idea of keeping the farm in Coogan Farm," says Maggie Jones, executive director of the Nature Center.
Maggie Jones was recently honored by Connecticut College with the Goodwin-Niering Center Alumni Environmental Achievement Award. This award recognizes her successful efforts to save the Coogan Farm, as well as her ongoing commitment to promoting environmental awareness in the community. We are proud to honor Maggie Jones and the rest of the Nature Center team. Congratulations! For more information, please visit their website at www.dpnc.org.
