Top Social Media Sites Used By SMBs

Facebook Business Pages are the most popular among SMBs, but the others may surprise you!

Due to its low barrier to entry and ubiquity among consumers, social media has become a favorite channel for small and medium-sized businesses. In fact, 74.5% of SMBs use social media for business promotion, according to findings from BIA/Kelsey, a research and consulting company focused on local media. That means SMBs are using social media more often than any other medium for business promotion.

The most popular social media platform used by small and medium-sized businesses for promotion and advertising is Facebook business pages, according to BIA/Kelsey’s ongoing study.

Facebook business pages are the overwhelming favorite among small and medium-sized businesses, with 55% of survey respondents indicating they use the social giant for business purposes. Rounding out the top five are LinkedIn, Facebook Ads, Twitter, and Google+. See below for the results:

  • Facebook Page for Business: 55.1%
  • LinkedIn: 31.0%
  • Facebook Ad or Promoted Post: 20.0%
  • Twitter: 20.0%
  • Google Social or Local: 19.8%

Also of note are Instagram and Pinterest. In the first year of tracking these relative social media newcomers in the study, 10.6% of SMBs reported using Instagram for business purposes, along with 10.3% using Pinterest.
