Scene On The Green

Despite a weather advisory that shut down Saturday's activities early, Suffield On The Green was once again a great place for the town to gather and learn more about their town.

Policitians stumped for votes while Rotary members kept the fires burning under dozens of charbroiled chickens. Musicians made merry and children ate the candy they grabbed at various information booths stocked with pamphlets and volunteer sign-up sheets.

It was a typical Suffield On The Green except for when it all came to a halt Saturday afternoon and the tents were dismantled for fear of strong winds and possible tornado conditions.

“Our main concern on Saturday was people’s safety, and we couldn’t afford to take any chances and stay open with severe weather and a tornado watch.  You can’t control Mother Nature; but she was very kind to us on Sunday, and attendees were treated to an absolutely beautiful day,” said Katherine Lee Balsamo, volunteer publicity chairperson for the Friends of Suffield.

The event typically closes at 4 p.m. on Sunday but the Friends of Suffield who put on the event decided to keep the festivities going a little longer, giving the food vendors especially more time to sell the items they had stocked.

"In a pinch we just jumped in there and made it work," said Laurie Foster, chair of the event for the Friends of Suffield.

Suffield on the Green and Craft Fair is the signature event hosted by the Friends of Suffield, a volunteer organization committed to enriching our town and giving back to the community.  Proceeds raised at Suffield on the Green are disbursed back to local organizations in the form of monetary grants each year.

A New Member Open House is set for Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Suffield Country Club. Prospective members can learn more about the Friends of Suffield. The guest speaker is Missie Morris, The Crazy Coupon Chick.
