Birch Grove School Gets Tidied Up for Spring

TEPTO organizes clean-up day.

Volunteers preened and cleaned the grounds of  this past Saturday, April 14, clearing away winter debris, hauling off loads of clippings and leaves, planting new items and freshening up flower beds.
Approximately a dozen people were on hand, giving their time, labor and talent to make Birch Grove a little nicer for kids returning to school after spring break.
School secretary, Karen Kies, helped organize the event and was definitely an asset to the team because of her love of gardening. Busy edging one of the flower beds at the entryway to the school, Kies said that she would be back. “I’ll try to get a little done throughout this week, volunteer-wise.”
While Kies edged, others hauled away wheelbarrows full of last year’s ornamental grass, which lay in piles after recently being clipped. Young children uprooted dandelions with special tools and swept sidewalks. Even Vice Principal Mike Moynihan was on hand doing his part, giving his time on a bright, sunny day off. Barbara Busch, who lives near the school, scooted over on her Ranger to make the job of hauling much easier.
“Creative Exteriors, Jim and Zina Gorman, donated plants. They’ve been extremely generous,” noted co-coordinator and chair of TEPTO’s Beautification Committee, Cheryl Nicholas. “They donated a bunch for Birch Grove and TIS last year, also,” she said.
Volunteers brought their own tools, gloves and enthusiasm to the event, which gave parents, kids and others the opportunity to do something positive for the school. If you missed it and would like to participate in an upcoming clean-up day, the TEPTO website will have that information as it becomes available.
