Bridgeport's First in Flight Festival, Frisbee Competitions and more to do in our area this weekend

The Discovery Museum and Planetarium, located at 4450 Park Ave. in Bridgeport, presents "Bridgeport: First in Flight Festival" this Sunday. Gather family and friends to the local museum for this one-day outdoor festival to learn and take part in the celebration of three of Bridgeport's significant contributions to aviation including the Sikorsky Helicopter, the Frisbee and Gustave Whitehead. The festival will take place this Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and as there will be food, fun and exibits throughout, there will also be the unveiling of a new exhibit, "Bridgeport: First in Flight." In attendance will be Mayor Bill Finch who will teleconference live with the Mayor of Leutershausen, Bavaria. A variety of historians will also be attending the festival to speak throughout the day as well as take part in a question and answer session. Dignitaries from the area as well as Germany will be in attendance to mark this historic event. Dr. Rene Rubbeling, German Consulate General and Congressman Jim Himes will also be in attendance this Sunday. Veteran's Park, located right next to the Discovery Museum which is now Bridgeport's new Frisbee Golf Course, will be holding a "Frisbee Festival" this Sunday. Included in the festival will be freestyle demonstrations, distance and accuracy competitions, live music and other family entertainment! Director of Spinning Bees Frisbee Shows, Freestyle Performer Gary Auerbach will be in attendance to demonstrate his skills and talk to guests. To know more about Auerbach, visit his website. Registration is required if you plan on participating in any events and can be done at the park. The Frisbee events schedule is as follows: between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. there will be an open course for disc throwing, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. there will be accuracy throwing for youth and adults, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. the Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tournament begins and between 12:30 noon to 1 p.m., a distance throw for youth ages 7-16 years old will take place. The Fairfield Public Library, located at 1080 Old Post Road, presents "The Well-Mannered Dog" this Saturday. Starting at 11 a.m., members of the Trap Falls Kennel Club will put on a presentation on how to help your dog focus and behave properly. All are welcome, children too, as long as they are 5 years-old and up. The program will also give you one-on-one guides to proper instruction and communication with your dog. Demonstrations will be held during the free, hour-long clinic, where there'll also be a question and answer session. Congregation Beth El of Fairfield, located at 1200 Fairfield Woods Road invites all those who are interested in their Open House and BBQ this Sunday. Stop by with the family from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to learn more about Beth El and meet new and current members. This free event will include activities for the kids, including a bouncy house.
