Trumbull Congregational Church Supports Heifer International

Money raised to help support sustainable agriculture and commerce

The Trumbull Congregational Church Christian Education program recently raised $1,700 for Heifer International, a 70 year old charity which helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to impoverished areas around the world.

The children donated “change for chores” throughout Lent, hosted a Palms and Pasta luncheon and the congregation made direct donations.  At a recent visit to a Heifer Educational Center farm in Rutland, MA they were given a tour during which they learned of the many economic benefits that the gift of livestock can bring to a family and a community.  They also learned how to turn wool into yarn, milk a goat, and discern the difference between a store egg and a farm fresh egg.

Heifer International’s approach is more than just giving handouts.  Among other activities, they donate animals, such as cows, sheep, goats and chickens to provide sustainable food sources and reliable income.  Agriculture products from their gifts, such as milk, eggs and wool, are not only consumed on a regular basis by a family
