Trumbull Man Sentenced for $8 Million Mortgage Fraud
The fraud involved using straw buyers to apply and obtain mortgages.

A Trumbull man was setnenced to 14 months in prison for his part in a mortgage fraud scheme.
Mohammed Islam, aka “Tanveer,” 39, was sentenced in federal court Tuesday.
Between 2006 and 2013 Islam was involved in a scheme to purchase numerous single and multi-family properties, mainly in Bridgeport Norwalk and Stamford, according to the U.S. Attorney District of Connecticut office.

Islam and fellow co-conspirators provided false information to mortgage lenders and directed the actions of straw buyers who would fraudulently apply for mortgage loans, but didn’t have an financial involvement in transactions. Islam managed and collected rents from the properties.
Lenders suffered losses of more than $8 million. Islam was ordered to pay restitution of more than $5.1 million. He pleaded guilty in March 2014.

He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
