Jesus, Atheists, Sharing Holiday Wishes Near Vernon Town Hall

Town officials have again opened Vernon's Central Park to a variety of groups.

VERNON, CT — The Bible tells us that when Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem for an regional census, they found every lodging establishment booked solid. They settled on camping out in a stable so Mary could at least have some shelter when giving birth to the baby Jesus.

This holiday season, Vernon officials have once again showed that Central Park across from Town Hall has enough room for Jesus, the atheists and anyone else who may want to share a holiday message.

It has been that way for years.

As of Wednesday morning, Jesus was laying on a manger inside a stable and the Connecticut Valley Atheists were next door with their message, "Keep America Secular."

Both were in the shadow of a large wreath hanging from town hall and nearby was the Santa House, which hosts St. Nick for children's visits on weekends.

There was no word from town officials on who else may show up in the park.
