Vernon Students Back at School

Snow-removal efforts are continuing.

Vernon Students Back at School

It's a time-honored cliche usually reserved for an athlete or official who wants to say something without saying anything.

"We're taking it one day at a time."

When Superintendent of Schools Mary Conway alluded to it on Wednesday, it spoke volumes.

It was reality.

She was referring to the re-opening of school after a blizzard that began Friday and lasted into Saturday dumped some 30 inches of snow into Vernon. And even on Wednesday, classes were delayed two hours.

"It was OK," Conway said of Wednesday's return. "I want to thank everyone for their continued work and their continued patience."

Things were a bit different while public works and recreation crews scramble to widen roads and open sidewalks. Many bus stops were relocated and in some instances improvised.

Many walkers had to board buses along a route because their paths were not safe.

Conway said there were two cases of mix-ups and a "few minor calls" from concerned parents.

She also complimented the bus drivers for making children who were either confused or new to riding a bus comfortable with the situation.

Conway said crews continue to work on school grounds in snow-clearing capacities.

"Things will be better each day," she said.
