Daily Five: The Mother of all Bake Sales Today

1. Today should be sunny, with a high around 47, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight should be partly cloudy, with a low around 33, according to the service.

2. Today is Election Day, which means all the political commercials are about to end. So a very exciting day for all.

We have our full election coverage article, but one thing not mentioned is the most important event going on in Waterford today: the annual fifth-grade Election Day bake sale at Quaker Hill School. The bake sale will be at Quaker Hill Elementary School for the length of the election, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Now, this is no ordinary bake sale. For lunch and dinner, there will be pizza provided by Antinore’s. Also, The Cake Lady, a New London business that specializes in cakes, will be dropping off some of her outstanding cupcakes for the event. So yet another great reason to vote today.

3. Waterford Beach will be closed until further notice as the beach is still a mess following the storm. The sand dunes at the beach, once among the best in the state, are now almost all gone. We will most likely do a story on what that means later this week.

Good news is the Planet Fitness in Waterford finally reopened at noon on Monday, after it was closed all week because of a power outage.

4. As mentioned, today is Election Day, and there is no school as the schools are used as polling places. And Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week are half-days to allow for parent-teacher conferences. Also, next Monday there is no school as well, as it is Veteran’s Day.

5. On this date in 1995, owner Art Modell announced that the Cleveland Browns were moving to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Ravens. This devastated the Browns’ fans, who were known throughout the NFL as one of the sport's most loyal fan bases. The Browns would eventually get a new team, essentially the second Cleveland Browns, who have made the playoffs once since their inception in 1999. Meanwhile the Ravens have been one of the most consistent football teams in the past 15 years, highlighted by winning the Super Bowl in 2001.

Considering that the best basketball player Cleveland ever had - in an unprecedented move - announced his decision to leave the team on national television and the baseball team hasn’t won a World Series since 1948, you can understand why many consider Cleveland to be the most snake-bitten sports city. To top it off, there was also this, this and this. So there you go.

    Quote of the Day

“The public is merely a multiplied me.”

    -Mark Twain

    Trivia of the Day
