Daily Five: Schacht Inducted into CT Veteran's Hall of Fame

1. Today should be partly sunny, with a high near 41, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight there is a slight chance of rain and snow, with a low around 29, according to the service.

2. Wednesday, Herbert Schacht, along with 11 other men, was inducted into the Connecticut Veteran’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

Schacht is a World War II Army veteran, where he attained the rank of private first class, technician fifth grade. He left the military in 1946 and has worked with special needs children at which his family owned. Other volunteer activities include work as a SCORE counselor, AIDS work in Africa and an adoption service in Guatemala.

"This esteemed record of public service was just beginning when Schacht served in the Army as a medical and surgical technician until his discharge in 1946," said State Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, about the ceremony in a press release. "His induction today into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame is an undeniably suitable honor."

3. Today is the day to sign up for Waterford’s youth wrestling program. From 6 to 7:45 tonight, people can come to the Waterford Community Center to sign up children kindergarten through fifth grade for Waterford's youth wrestling program. The cost to sign up is $50 and practice begins on December 12th. Kindergarteners through second-graders practice from 5:30 to 6:30 and third-through-fifth-graders practice from 6:30 to 7:45 that night, and the program is open to boys and girls.

    4. One new movie opens tonight at Waterford’s Regal Cinemas. Killing Them Softly, a suspense starring Brad Pitt, plays at 4:30, 7:15 and 10:10. Also, Skyfall, the new James Bond movie, is still out and word is it is great. That plays at 4:05, 6:55 and 9:35.

        5. On this date in 2004, longtime Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings of Salt Lake City, Utah, finally lost after winning 74 consecutive Jeopardy games in a row. Overall, Jennings won $2.5 million during the run. And on this date in 1998, Exxon and Mobile signed a $73.7 billion agreement to merge, creating the world’s largest company, Exxon-Mobile.
