A Redding man's laptop refurbishing company sells desktops, tablets and smart phones as well. They also are interested in your old computers.

Discount Laptop Shop recently earned a distinction only 16 other companies across the nation had previously earned: It's now a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher.

Located in Brookfield, Discount Laptop Shop is the brainchild of Chad Messenger, who lives in Redding. The company buys used and off-lease laptops, desktops, smart phones and tablets, restores them to their factory settings and sells them at “aggressively competitive” prices, Messenger told Patch.

“When it comes to the MacBook Pros, why spend $1,600 to $2,000 when you can buy a refurbished Apple for $600, $700,” Messenger said. “Instead of buying a new Dell for $600, you can buy it for $200.”

Messenger’s company, which moves “thousands of laptops and desktops a month,” also offers IBM and HP products. The company offers one-year, two-year and three-year warranties as well.

Discount Laptop Shop employs 20 people in a 12,000-square foot factory in Brookfield.

“We’re expanding to the warehouse next door for an additional 12,000 square feet as well,” Messenger said.

The company, Messenger said, sells to the three top “e-tailers,” TigerDirect, Newegg and PCMall/MacMall. A lot of people buy refurbished products from those three sites. Messenger says people can save money by buying through Discount Laptop Shop directly.

Going Green

In addition to selling to individuals, business and e-tailers, Discount Laptop Shop is currently trying to land educational clients, Messenger said.

“We went to some local schools, and they were talking to us about how tight their budgets are and how they are all switching over to Apple products, but their budgets won’t allow them to buy all these computers that they need,” he said. “We were asking them what they do with their old systems. We found out some of their disposals aren’t very green—they just throw out old machines. But we can buy their old excess product. It’s not garbage. There’s a value to it. They were super shocked.”

Messenger said if given the opportunity, his company would take out excess product that schools might think is garbage and give them money in exchange.

Any product that comes in, Messenger said, will be taken apart and all of its operable parts would be used to help restore other machines. The “e-waste company” Discount Laptop Shop is partnered with then recycles parts that are unable to be used.

“I’d be happy to go to any facility, give tips on what I see and tell them how they can save money,” Messenger said. “I’m just looking to spread the word and educate people about this opportunity to save money and make money at the same time.”

Messenger said anyone interested in learning more about his company should email  sales@discountlaptopshop.com or call 203.740.0562.
