A former Stop & Shop employee was arrested after police were tipped off he may have been hiding in the store after hours in order to steal cigarettes.

Reginald Joseph, 42, of Bridgeport was charged with burglary in the third degree, two counts of assaulting a police officer, larceny in the third degree and resisting arrest on Dec. 30.

According to police, with the assistance of the Westport K9 unit, officers arrived outside the business at around 9:14 p.m. that night, preparing to enter the store and look for the suspect. Before that happened, Joseph “came walking out the front door with a box in his hands,” police said.

Officers then ordered Joseph to stop, and he did not.

“He ran at one of the officers, pushing him then kicking the K9,” police said. “He continued to run at which time the K9 was released and he took the subject to the ground.”

Joseph was held on $50,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 31.
