Wilton Police Presence at Town's Schools

Superintendent of Schools Gary Richards sent a message Friday detailing safety precautions underway in Wilton following news of a school shooting in Newtown.

Wilton Police Presence at Town's Schools

In response to the school shooting which allegedly occurred this morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Dr. Gary Richards, superintendent of Wilton Schools, issued the following announcement:

In light of today’s senseless violence in Newtown, I am writing to let you know of the steps that we have taken to provide a safe and supportive environment for students and staff.

Since 10:00am we have been monitoring the situation with the Wilton Police Department. As a precautionary measure, officers were dispatched to each of our schools to help ensure the safety of our children and staff. Please know staff have not shared any details regarding the events with students.

We expect that this tragedy may impact members of our school community. Should students need support, our mental health staff will be available on Monday. In addition, we will post information on each of our school’s websites which parents may find helpful if they choose to discuss today’s events. Parents should feel free to contact their child’s guidance counselor, school social worker, or school psychologist should they have specific concerns related to their child’s reaction to this tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Newtown Public Schools’ students, staff, parents and community.

Gary G. Richards
Superintendent of Schools
