Three months following the town council's approval of funds to improve Windsor High's varsity baseball field, the field has begun to show signs of a new day for Warriors baseball, and an improved experience for spectators and players, alike.

With over four months to go until the diamond fills with players, the field on Sage Park Road looks pristine. A renovated irrigation system, raised pitcher's mound and manicured base paths are just the beginning — two nearly completed dugouts round out the field's long-overdue overhaul.

The improvements, while criticized by some as not meeting all the safety or recreational needs of Windsor's baseball players, were approved after extensive lobbying on behalf of baseball parents, players and supporters.

The town council unanimously approved funding for the project in July, but not before the town planning and zoning commission shot down the proposal citing a short-sighted vision for baseball play in town.

Planning and zoning commission members refused to support the plan at the time, saying there were still plenty of needed improvements that will not be addressed with the recreation department's plans, including the blinding sun behind the field's backstop that can be a safety hazard for fielders.

The project carries an $80,000 price tag, and has included regrading the infield, resetting home plate and the pitcher's mound, installing sod, adding clay mix to the infield, construction of dugouts, improved irrigation, replacement of the outfield fence and fence repairs behind home plate.
