Smoke Billows Into L'Enfant Station from Metro Tracks

Smoke and fire problems continued in the Metro system Sunday, this time at the same station where a woman died last year.

It was a scary situation at L'Enfant Plaza Metro station today as heavy smoke caused a Green Line train to be offloaded.

It's the same station where a woman died last year after smoke filled a Metro train, leading to dozens of injuries. Smoke and fire problems have continued to plague the Metro system in recent weeks as officials have scrambled to make fixes.

The Washington Post quoted Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly as saying that the incident happened just before 11 a.m. when smoldering debris between L'Enfant and the Archives Metro station caused smoke to blow toward Branch Avenue, causing a Green Line train headed toward Branch Avenue to be offloaded so Metro personnel could investigate.

Metro tweeted shortly after 11 a.m. that commuters should expect "residual delays" to Branch Avenue because of a "track problem."

Metro personnel reportedly extinguished the fire, and service returned to normal not long after.
