'DMV To Return To Georgetown'

Councilman Jack Evans announced its return at a Thursday debate.

'DMV To Return To Georgetown'
A DC Department of Motor Vehicles location will reopen in the Shops at Georgetown Park mall in May, said Councilman Jack Evans at a mayoral debate on Thursday.

At the start of the debate, Evans said he had "secured a new lease" for them.

Georgetown Dish article quoted the DMV associate director Gabriel Robinson saying that the new location will not be in the exact location as before, but will still be beneath the other shops and will be similar to the original.

Evans briefly addressed complaints about the location having limited, costly parking, saying that ultimately a DMV in the mall is beneficial to residents of Georgetown and its surrounding neighborhoods.

The previous DMV location in the Shops at Georgetown closed in 2012 when the mall changed owners and underwent renovations. Since then, northwest D.C. has been without a full-service DMV location.

A temporary northwest DMV location with adjudication services was set up at 301 C St., NW.

But the DMV's return to Georgetown was always the plan, according to a previous Patch article

Shortly after the location closed, Evans announced that he had Mayor Vincent Gray's support in returning the northwest location to the Shops at Georgetown Park.

"Gray said he was 'glad' the DMV 'will be maintained here in Georgetown,'" Evans said, as quoted in the article. T

he renovated mall has also become home to a  TJ Maxx, the  first H&M to carry home goods in the U.S. and, soon, a  Pinstripes restaurant with a bowling alley and bocce ball.
