We caught up with the staff at The Dunedin Smokehouse, the winner of Dunedin Patch's 2012 Best Customer Service tournament, to find out the secret to their customer service success.

Name of business:

Who is on the management team? Owners René and John Johnson, General Manager Melissa DePaul, Pit Master Rick Kanapik

When did the business open? November 2010 (The restaurant in April 2011.)

How long have you lived in the area?

The Johnsons are in the process of relocating to Dunedin from Odessa. The couple are planning a new retail-residential development near (which they also own) and The Dunedin Smokehouse, and they plan to move into the space when it's ready.

What do you love about working in Dunedin?

"The sense of community," René Johnson said. In the current economy, "you don't just start a business and grow it without community support," she said, making note of strong partnerships between local businesses and the city.

"It's awesome that everyone supports each other," DePaul added.

What makes your customer service stand out?

"We have a good team," Johnson said, "and it's been the same people since the beginning."

Since the restaurant opened, the staff members have grown as a team, and the customers have become "like a little family," DePaul said. "That's Dunedin!"
