'Green Saturday' Events Coming to Gulfport

Learn all about planting fruit trees, urban gardens, a community food table and more at "Green Saturday" on Nov. 24 in Gulfport.

Mark your calendars for "Green Saturday" on Nov. 24th in Gulfport. Guests will learn about sustainable growth and growing one's own food. "Green Saturday" is also intended to help spur a movement to plant food-producing fruit and nut trees on public land, including parks and churches.

Events include a fruit and nut tree sale, a workshop on planting and caring for Florida fruit trees, a community food table, and a showing of the film "Grow!"   All events will be held in or near the Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave. South in Gulfport. A suggested donation of $5 per participant is requested.

4 to 6 p.m.: a fruit and nut tree sale will be held, with free trees being offered to the first 33 film ticket holders.  

5 to 6 p.m.: a seminar on the planting and care of Florida fruit trees will be conducted by Jene of Jene's Tropicals in St. Petersburg. Local activists will also be on hand to offer guidance on local urban garden advocacy.  

5 to 7 p.m.: A community food table will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m., including foods prepared and donated by Park Shore Grill, Meze 119, Peaceful Plate and T and Me Tea Co.  

At 7:30 p.m.: The film "Grow!" will be screened at the theater from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. "Grow!" is a documentary which chronicles the joys and challenges of 20 young, college-educated Americans on 12 different Georgia farms, each pursuing a life more meaningful for themselves outside of corporate America by finding land and growing food using sustainable methods.  More information about the film can be found at www.growmovie.net.
