First Responder Spots Boat Fire on Day Off

Augustin Hondares of the Miami-Dade Fire Department apparently isn't one to leave his work back at the office.

MIAMI, FL — Some people take their jobs home with them. An off-duty Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue officer may be one of them. Augustin Hondares was enjoying the view underneath the 79th Street Causeway on Wednesday when he spotted something he would have preferred to have left back at the office: fire.

Hondares, who is a lieutenant in the department's Marine Services unit, called authorities when he spotted flames shooting out of boat that was believed to have been unoccupied. (Sign up for our free Daily Newsletters and Breaking News Alerts for the Miami Patch.)

"He actually works on the boats for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue," Lieutenant Felipe Lay of the department told Patch. "It is kind of coincidental."

"The 30-foot catamaran was quickly extinguished by City of Miami, Miami Beach and Miami-Dade fireboats," added Lay. "Fortunately, no one was injured."
