Sean Rodriguez of Atlanta Braves Involved in Accident with Stolen Miami-Dade Police Car

Rodriguez' wife and two of his children remained hospitalized.

MIAMI — The Chevrolet Suburban involved in a fatal traffic accident with a stolen Miami-Dade police car on Saturday afternoon was driven by Atlanta Braves infielder Sean Rodriguez, according to Miami-Dave police.

The player's wife and two of his children suffered serious injuries in the crash and remained hospitalized on Sunday night.

Rodriguez was treated on the scene and released after his black 2016 Suburban had T-boned the stolen police car along SW 24 Street and SW 99 Avenue at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The driver of the stolen police car was killed when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and sideswiped a Honda Civic before being struck by Rodriguez' vehicle, according to Miami-Dade police.

Rodriguez' wife, Giselle, was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Kendall Regional Trauma Center and his two sons — ages eight and two — were taken to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where they were initially reported to be in serious but stable condition.

Reports said that Giselle Rodriguez was in fair condition on Sunday but that the children remained in serious condition.

The Atlanta Braves tweeted their concern for Rodriguez and his family late Sunday night:

The driver of the stolen police car was not immediately identified by police.

Miami-Dade Detective Daniel Ferrin told Patch on Saturday that the police car was stolen while a uniformed officer was investigating a suspicious incident at SW 16 Street and 107 Avenue.

"The officer was conducting her investigation when she observed her vehicle drive away," Ferrin explained. "The officer began making notifications that her vehicle was stolen, when a call was dispatched over police frequency of a marked police vehicle involved in a traffic accident. Officers arriving on the scene were able to determine that the police vehicle was the same car taken minutes earlier."

Ferrin said that the suspect lost control of the police car while heading east on SW 24 Street and crossed into the westbound lanes, sideswiping a Honda Civic and getting T-boned by the Chevy Suburban as it also headed west.

The driver of the Civic was treated on the scene and released.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue extinguished a fire from the police car and pronounced the driver dead on the scene.

Rodriguez' Twitter profile says he is married to the "love of my life." The Miami native signed a two-year deal with the Atlanta Braves at the end of November.

He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays prior to signing with the Braves. He was named the National League Co-Player of the Week for Sept. 12-18, 2016.

Rodriguez is expected to begin the upcoming season as the Braves' primary second baseman, according to MLB.com, which said that the minor injuries he suffered in the crash were not expected to prevent him from starting spring training.
