Star Island Boat Fire: 2 People Jump to Safety

First responders found a boat fully engulfed near Star Island on Monday night and dangerously close to other vessels.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — Two people jumped to safety when a fire engulfed their boat near Star Island on Monday night. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. First responders said that the boat was anchored at the time.

"At around 10 pm a call came in over VHF 16 of a vessel on fire at anchorage near Star Island," explained Erika Benitez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "When MDFR Fireboat 73 arrived, the boat was fully engulfed and dangerously close to other vessels." (Sign up for our free Daily Newsletters and Breaking News Alerts for the Miami Beach Patch.)

Benitez said that first responders were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and prevent the vessel from sinking.

"The two passengers on board had luckily jumped off the boat and were uninjured in this incident," she added. "MDFR would like to remind everyone to always have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of an emergency. Fires can spread very quickly causing extensive injury and property damage."

Benitez did not have additional information on the size of the boat or two people who jumped to safety.
