Dad Accidentally Shot, Killed Son at Sarasota Gun Range: Deputies

A 14-year-old boy died Sunday after a shooting at the High Noon Gun Range in Sarasota.

Sarasota, FL — A family outing to a Sarasota gun range on Sunday turned tragic for a father and his three children.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, William Brumby, 64, went to the High Noon Gun Range, 4583 Bee Ridge Road, with three of his children.

Brumby was in the last shooting lane at the range with a solid wall on his right-hand side, an email from the sheriff’s office said. Around 3:15 p.m., Brumby fired a round and the spent shell casing struck the wall. When it did, it deflected back and hit Brumby’s shirt, the email said.

“Brumby then used his right hand, which was holding the handgun, in an attempt to remove the casing,” the sheriff’s office said. “While doing so, he inadvertently pointed the firearm directly behind him and accidentally fired.”

The round that fired struck Stephen Brumby, 14. The teen was taken to a local hospital, but died later from his injuries.

Deputies say Brumby also had his 24-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter with him. Neither of the two were injured in the incident.

There are no charges pending in the case at this time, the sheriff’s office said. The investigation remains active.
