Most Temple Terrace Area Schools Get D Grades

Most elementary and middle schools in the Temple Terrace area have received D grades, according to 2011-12 Florida School Grades data released by the Department of Education July 11.

, which received an F last year, brought its grade up to a D this year. , and school all dropped from a C last year to a D this year. received a D in its first year.

Three area schools maintained their grades. kept its A, upheld its B, and maintained its C.

Like Riverhills Elementary,  saw a gain this year. It went from a B last year to an A this year.

The Hillsborough County School District said Wednesday that it expected grades to be lower this year compared to last year because of raised standards. Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson wrote an open letter to parents explaining the expected impact of the new standards.

“As grades for elementary, middle and many combination schools become available you may notice that some schools have lower grades than last year,” Commissioner Robinson wrote. “That does not necessarily mean that the schools, teachers or students are not doing as well as they were before. There were a number of changes to the state’s accountability system this year that impacted the results.”

As for the rest of Hillsborough County, more than 59 percent of elementary and middle schools earned an A or B grade, according to the district.

High school grades are not expected to be released until late fall, after graduation rates and other factors are calculated.
